Recently, I found out there was a UTMB event happening in Alsace, France. Still riding high from my recent 42.5 km run from the Swiss city of Schaffhausen to the source of the Danube River, I thought, why not register? But then I took a quick look at the UTMB website and their gear requirements—and I was instantly overwhelmed.

My gear? Just a pair of running shoes. The official list wanted a waterproof jacket rated in something called Schmerber, two headtorches, waterproof overpants, a survival blanket—the works. First problem: I didn't have the cash for all this stuff. Second problem: even if I somehow bought everything, I'd have zero time to actually use it before race day. Showing up with brand-new gear you've never worn is like being thrown onto the frontlines without knowing how to use your own equipment. Honestly, it just felt senseless.

So, before making any decisions, I did my homework. I dug into every single required item, looked at what it actually costs, and figured out what I'd actually buy if I were lining up at the start. Here's what I found—and maybe it'll save you some stress, too.

    Safety gear (all runners)

    • ID / passport — original document, not a copy.
    • Smartphone with the LiveTrail app installed, international roaming enabled, kept on for the entire race with the race emergency number saved.
    • Water containers — minimum 1 litre total in sealed, resealable containers (1.5 L recommended for UTMB, TDS and CCC).
    • Survival blanket — minimum 1.40 m × 2 m.
    • Whistle.
    • Waterproof hooded jacket — approx. 20,000 Schmerber waterproofing, RET < 13, fully sealed seams, hood attached.
    • Two headtorches — each with a backup power source. 200 lumens is recommended. If rechargeable, carry a power bank of at least 5,000 mAh. UTMB requires at least one head torch with a forward-facing red light mode.

    Gear & carrying

    • Running vest or pack — must be worn for the entire race.
    • Self-adhering elastic bandage — minimum 100 cm × 6 cm.
    • Sun cap or neck gaiter.
    • Waterproof overpants.
    • Warm second layer — either a long-sleeve top of minimum 180 g, or a 110 g base layer plus a windproof DWR jacket. No cotton.
    • Beanie.
    • Warm waterproof gloves.

    Food & hydration

    • Personal beaker — minimum 15 cl, no lid (aid stations no longer provide single-use cups).
    • Food reserve — approx. 800 kcal.

    Weather-activated additional kit

    • Full-leg tights
    • Sunglasses
    • Protective eyewear
    • Saharan cap (with neck cover)
    • Sunscreen SPF 50, minimum 15 ml
